5 Tips for Managing a Remote Team

5 Tips for Managing a Remote Team 5 Tips for Managing a Remote Team The truth is, managing a remote gruppe does require you to think outside of the, well, office, but its fairly easy to do and youll have amazing resultsWhether you have a semi-remote or completely remote workforce, here are five tips for managing a remote team successfully1. Set ExpectationsIn order for your remote workers to know what is expected of them, its a good idea to clearly define goals and objectives early on even as early asthe recruiting process (especially if youre recruiting remote workers). These goals should be clearly communicated not only during the job interview, but also during meetings, check-ins, and performance reviews, too. By communicating ansicht target objectives, your team will know what they should be doing at all times, and more importantly, have an idea of what they should be working towards. You should also outline some performance metrics that can provide both your staff (and yours elf) with some insight into their productivity levels and how they are progressing toward their goals.2. Communicate With Your TeamCommunication is key when you have acompletely remote workforce, a work-from-home policy, or just a fewemployees with flexible schedules. Managing a virtual team means that youll need to communicate not just what the next assignment is, but also other information that is important to your workers, such as company news and updates, acquisitions, mergers, and anything that can help your employeesaccomplish their work and feel connected to the company as a whole.Beyond communicating with employeesas their boss, you also need to set up your remote team for success by implementing tools that allow your workers to communicate well with oneother. Encourage remote workersto reach out to each other via instant messaging, email, chat clients, and the phone Communication tools such as Join.me, Skype, and Campfire can give your employees an opportunity to connect wi th each other and strengthen the bonds between your team members.3. Lead by ExampleOne of the best benefits of working from home is just that you are working from home. That means that, unless otherwise directed, you can work whenever and wherever you want. If you want your employees to take advantage of their work flexibility, youll need to set the example of how to work flexibly. That means you dont send emails after the workday is done and expect employees to answer them. It also means encouraging your employees to enjoy the work-life balance inherent in a flexible job, such as going to see their childs school performance or taking their parents to a doctors appointment. If your employees see you working 24/7, they might feel the need to follow your lead.4. Get to Know Remote Employees PersonallyBeyond remote team meetings and email updates, you should make aneffort to get to know your employees on a more personal level. Without a water cooler to stand around, it isnt always easy totalk toyour employees about what they did over the weekend. Its a good idea to schedule informal check-ins every once in a while you can group a few employees together to make it more of a virtual coffee chat, in which you can talk about everything from fab summer reads to guilty TV pleasures. You can chat about anything during these mock meetings except work5.Institute an Open-Door PolicyWhen employees are flung fararound the country (or even the globe), it can be easy for small issues to flare up into big problems. Establish an open-door policy with your workers so that they feel comfortable coming to talk to you about work-related issues or even personal problems. By being accessible, friendly, and professional during all of your interactions with your staff, you will make sure that your employees feel comfortable speaking with you about any issue. In turn, this can help solve any potential problems that might arise before they turn into major catastrophes. In some ways, managi ng a remote workforce is not very different from managing an in-office team. Taking advantage of technology and remembering to stay connected (on both a professional and personal level) will ensure that your remote workforce is strong, productive, dedicated, and happy.

10 Elements of a Great Cover Letter

10 Elements of a Great Cover Letter 10 Elements of a Great Cover Letter 1. UniquenessMany hiring managers will trash a cover letter if its bedrngnis customized.Putting in the extra time and effort to write a unique cover letter can make all the difference in the success of your application. Theres nothing wrong with following a formula, but use custom language for each job and company. This simple step shows youre taking the opportunity seriously.2. PersonalizationSkip To Whom It May Concern and personalize your greeting instead by using the name of the hiring manager. Check the job listing for their name and contact details. If the information isnt included, search the company website or call the human resources office.3. Ease of UseIts still accepted practice to include your mailing address in the header of your cover letter, but also remember to include your email address, cellphone number, and website (if you have one). Put this information front and center so a hiring manager can quickly find it when theyre ready to contact you.4. PersuasionThe first one or two sentences after your greeting should demonstrate why youre the best candidate for the job. Giving a very specific reason will grab the hiring managers attention and encourage them to keep reading.5. ConcisionHiringmanagers tend to prefer a cover letter ofhalf a page or less in length. Your aim is to grab their attention and highlight your experience not recite everything in your resume. Include a few key points that will entice the hiring manager to read on (and request an interview). When you send a cover letter digitally, be sure to add links to your website, portfolio, social media channels, and any other sites that apply.6. RelevanceDont simply list your skills. Instead, describe how they apply to this particular job. You need to do this even if your past work experience is not in the same industry Youre trying to convince the hiring manager youre worth interviewing. Its the why, not the what, that sells.7. OptimizationHiring managers are often pressedfor time. They may not read every word of your cover letter, so youll want to include industry-relevant keywords that will help them quickly understand that youre a match for position.8. EagernessShow genuine interest in not only the position, but also in the company as a whole. Do your research and find out about its values, mission, and notable achievements. Again, putting in the extra effort will help your application stand out and show that youre not just sending the same cover letter to every job you are applying for.9. StraightforwardnessEnd your cover letter with a strong closing statement. Thank the hiring manager for taking the time to review your application and include a call to action most likely a request for an interview.10. Grammatical CorrectnessCheck (and double-check) your spelling and grammar. Simple mistakes can land your cover letter in the trash bin. Dont rely on autocorrect or spell check, since thes e programs dont always pick up all errors. Read and reread the letter yourself, then ask a friend to do the same. The traditional cover letter is still very much a vital part of most job applications. 10 Types of Difficult Job Interviewers and How to Deal with Them

10 Types of Difficult Job Interviewers and How to Deal with Them10 Types of Difficult Job Interviewers and How to Deal with ThemWhen youre going in for a job bewerbungsinterview, ideally you would like to be greeted by someone who is relaxed, approachable, friendly and professional. It would make it easier to follow their relatively straightforward and natural lead. It would put your nerves at ease early on in the meeting and leave room for you to totally ace your answers.Unfortunately, this perfect interviewer doesnt always show up. In their place, you might find yourself confronted with a really difficult person, the hiring manager that you have to win over. The one whose approval has become a prerequisite for obtaining your dream job.Lets take a look at ten of these difficult interviewersRobot RitaThis lady might as well be a talking stone wall. She throws out questions in a monotone voice and then stares at you with a blank look on her face when you reply. She offers very little conversation in return and shows absolutely no emotion as she runs robotically through her list.Shy SamWhen this guy asks questions, you can barely hear him. Hes unable to maintain eye contact and appears extremely nervous just being in the room. Hopefully its because youre his very first interview as a recruiter.Joker JimThis guy has an enormous personality and isnt afraid of using you as his guinea pig to try out his latest comedy routines. His jokes are very inappropriate and youre not quite sure if hes just being sarcastic or waiting for a reaction. This schrift of interviewer makes you feel like youre not being taken seriously.Hyper HeatherShe charges at you like a bull as soon as she meets you. Shes all over the place and her questions fire out of her mouth a million miles an hour. She interrupts your questions with her own and intensely nods along as you talk. She maintains full eye contact at all times. This girl is full onPressure PeteThis guy will stare you down and make y ou work hard during the interview. He asks difficult, tricky questions that really have no obvious point and/or he phrases questions in a negative way to make it almost appear like an investigation rather than an interview.Friendly FridaThis girl just wants to be your BFF She spends half of the interview asking personal questions about your dog and has an OMG, me too response to everything you say. Shes not really interested in your skills or expertise but really wants to know your favorite flavor of ice creamRush RobertThis guy makes you feel like youre an inconvenience and that he has a million other things he could be doing if you werent there. His time is more valuable than yours and youre wasting it. He shoots questions out rapidly and nods before you even speak in an effort to speed things up.Sour SallyShe just seems irritated and offended by every word you speak and has a sour look on her face during the whole interview. Youre draining her of all her energy and shes really an noyed by you. When you attempt at a little humor, she gives you a look that could melt your face.Clueless CarlThis guy is probably the most unorganized interviewer you will ever come across. He has no idea why youre there, what hes doing there, what job youre interviewing for and what he should be asking you. His hair is wild an unkempt and he has coffee stains all over his shirt. Its clear hes been asked to step in for someone and hes doing a bad job of hiding the fact that hes clueless.Bored BobThis guy would rather be anywhere else in the world but in an office interviewing you. He constantly yawns when youre speaking and asks questions that make no sense or come out half-finished and you have to guess the ending just to respond. How do you deal with these difficult interviewers?Be aware of social cues as well as the pace and tone being used by the interviewer and try to adapt accordingly. For example, lets say youre out on the street and someone recognizes you as they rush by. Th eyre clearly running late and they quickly wave before continuing on in a mad dash. Would you call out that persons name and have them stop and tell you how theyve been, how their day is going and on and on? No, its all about knowing when to follow someones lead. Theyre obviously in a rush so you let them move on.When confronted by one of the interview types above, you will have to follow their lead. Stay true to yourself and answer honestly and remember not to say what you think they want to hear. Dont allow their flippant demeanor or intensity make you stumble or get nervous. Dont take it personally, just stay focused on giving the best interview possible and youll do great

Research the EventRather than simply showing up atthe event and hoping for the best, you and your merry bunch of recruiters will need to have afirm understanding of the exhibition, including the schedule and the type of attendees you can expect to encounter. With this information in hand, youll know when and where you need to be to find candidates whomight be a good fit for your needs.A simple and efficient way to carry out initial research is by monitoring social media updates related to the exhibition. Most events will have dedicated pages or accounts on various social media platforms, but you can also check out live updates on Twitter by following the events dedicated hashtag. You can also use this hashtag to interact with people who are attending the exhibition, giving you a direct line of communication to begin the recruitment process before the event gets started.2. Establish Your GoalsIts essential to narrow down your key goals before the event, as this will give you a set of clear targets to keep in mind throughout the exhibition.Regarding recruitment specifically, while you may be looking to hire new talent as soon as possible, you wontnecessarily be able to do so on the day of the exhibition. Consider the event your opportunity to make an all-important first impression and find warm leads who can formally become candidates in the weeks after the event.3. Exhibitioners, AssemblePut together a team of confident and capable employees to man your exhibition booth and execute your recruitment strategy. (More on this below.)4. Hold Multiple Mission BriefingsBy giving yourself lots of time to plan, you allow yourself to schedule several in-house meetings where you and your team can discuss what e veryone needs to be doing, the schedule for the event, and theoverall approach youre looking to implement.5. Everything Must Be on BrandFrom designs and logos to fonts and colors, every aspect of your exhibition stand and recruitment strategy should be an accurate representation of your brand. Use some of your planning time tohash out the cohesive brand image you want to portray.6. Do Some Pre-Exhibition PromotionYouare undoubtedly already using social media to market your business, so why notuse it to market your presence at thisupcoming event? Post regular updates on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and any other social sites you use tokeep your followers in the loop about the event. Mention that youre in the market for new employeesto motivate candidates to seek you out at the exhibition.Get Creative With Your Exhibition StandWith the sheer volume of businesses attending exhibitions, youll need to be unique to attract the attention of potential customers and new talent. Your exhibi tion stand needs to have a bespoke, on-brand design and a layout that suits your needs. As part of your preparation for the exhibition, you may want to connect with an expert who can help brainstorm ideas for your stand. An expert can also provide some insight into best designpractices with respect to recruiting. For example, you may not realize youll need to consider your furniture needs, but forcing prospects to stand for extended periods of time while they discuss your employment opportunities may send talent a message that you are not very considerate of your employees needs.Aside from speaking to an expert, you can also learn a lot from your fellow exhibitors. Think about previous events youve attended. What aspects of stands have you seen attendees positively react to? Would these work for your business? For more expert recruiting advice, check out the latest issue of Recruiter.com MagazineAdditionally, here are a few general best practices to considerNo clutterThat means no half -drunk cups of coffeeor half-eaten sandwiches left on display. It also means nobored support staff with nothing to do send them around the exhibition to report back with highlights, or direct them to the exhibition entrance with an engaging leaflet to drive interested visitors to your stand. It can be tempting to go for all the bells and whistles, but be careful not tooverdo it. Meaningless noise will make you stand out for all the wrong reasons. On the flip side, however, a bare-bones display can convey that your attendance was an afterthought. Try to strike the right balance.Dont forget that an exhibition can be long and tedious.Your employees can expect to spend a lot of time on their feet and talking to excited prospects, so a constant supply of coffee is always vital Opt for a visually appealing and well-lit display.Dont forget, you are trying to catch the eyes of visitors. An interactive display, no matter how subtle, is koranvers to increase attendee engagement. Is there som ething for attendees to taste, smell, hear, watch, or feel? Clearly label your display. If visitors cant immediately tell what your business is about, they likely wont come up to ask you.Use an underlying theme to tie your product displays together.Remember your branding here A mishmash of odd assortments thrown together is unlikely to get the reception you want. Offer something for both engaged prospects and generalvisitors to take away with them. This helps you stay top of mind. Be sure to include contact details with your giveaways, as this will givepeople a way to get in touch.Take the Right PeopleMuch of our personal and professional communication may occur via digital platforms these days, but the art of face-to-face conversation is vital when it comes to recruiting at exhibitions. No matter how exciting a brand is, your employees are the real beating heart and personality of your company. Your stand needs to be staffed by a team of individuals who possess brilliant interpersona l skills and a confident command of recruitment tactics.Your chosen team members will be the face of the company at the event, so brief them on how they should present your brand. If youre unsure whom to take with you, youll need to determine which of your workersare the best fits for the task at hand. Keep the following in mind when choosing your exhibition teamPut out the Bat-Signal and see who volunteers. The people who volunteer will do so because they are eager to take on the challenge and confident they can succeed. Thiswill also help you avoidtaking employees who dont want to be there, which could prove devastating for your brand image. Take your sales team. Members of your sales team will often prove highly effective at business events, as they possess both an in-depth knowledge of your products or services and the gift of the gab necessary to achieve your goal of recruiting newtalent. Mix it up. Youre likely recruiting for several roles across multiple departments, so you s hould try torepresent those departments bybringing along an employee from each. Look for people who exemplify your values.Youll want your booth staffed by peoplewho are well-versed in your brand and what it stands for. If your company prides itself on developing confident and happyemployees who get plenty of autonomy, you dont want your brand represented by employees who are bored and irritable. If youre on the lookout for new talent, an exhibition or trade show can prove to be a powerful recruiting platform, but making the most of the event will require plenty of planning, coordination, and hard work. You should never walk blindly into an exhibition. Instead, efficient preparation combined with confident and charismatic execution will attract attention, increase your businesss exposure, and spread the word that your company is hiring.Tom Bristow is the managing director of The Plus Group.

Expert Advice on How to Get a Government Job

Expert Advice on How to Get a Government JobExpert Advice on How to Get a Government JobJobs with local, state and federal agencies are some of the most stable out there. These positions carry a very low risk of termination compared to private-sector jobs, and they often come with generous benefits packages and pension plans. The process of finding and applying for behauptung jobs is different from that of private-sector job-seeking. Another approach is required. Weve asked experts in public-sector careers to outline the basics of that approach and give you some ideas for landing a job with a government agency.Get SpecificWhile the application process for many federal jobs starts with the mega-jobs website USAJobs.gov, applying for positions in state and local government often is facilitated by a personal relationship with the person (or people) responsible for filling them. Still, you should search for these jobs online so you know who to talk to about them and what they are.You can start with a simple online search for name of your city or state + careers. Its also a good idea to supplement your search on your city or state general careers website with more specific searches in the departments where you think your skills will be useful. In addition, you can also search for government jobs with the jobs search engine Simply Hired. If youve got experience in conservation, for example, you could search for name of your city or state + parks department careers. If youre trained in engineering, you could try name of your city or state + public works department careers. Even if these department-specific sites dont list a lot of jobs- and in smaller towns, they may not- theyll still give you contact info for people in the department who can let you know whats available.Knowing someone on the inside probably wont land you the position on its own, said Phil Windley, chief technology officer of Kynetx, a social-media company that works closely with government agencies. B ut you might still glean vital information about what the hiring manager is looking for and what to emphasize on your application.Read up on TrendsLike any job sector, the public sector offers opportunities that change over time. Youll save yourself a lot of wasted effort if you check out the areas where job growth is happening versus those where very few new employees are getting hired. There are few government entry-level positions being advertised today, said Gerald Pecinovsky of Falcon Associates, the company that manages the online government job board GovtJobs.com. Seasoned government employees are choosing to delay retirement, and the fiscal condition of government budgets does not allow for many entry-level positions.Experts say that local governments located in areas that werent hit as hard by the recession tend to offer more low-level positions than state and federal agencies do.Certain areas of government work seem to be holding steady. Among these are information technolo gy (IT) and public safety jobs such as law enforcement.Public safety continues to be a core service citizens want at all cost, Pecinovsky said. You may hear cases where the public safety workforce is significantly reduced, but its usually because of extreme circumstances like bankruptcy. On the whole that field is very stable.Spend time on the jobs websites of your local and state governments to get a feel for which types of positions theyre working to keep filled.Follow Your ExperienceWhether youre pursuing a job at the local, state or federal level, youll stand a much better chance of getting a foot in the door if youve already got the appropriate certifications and experience in jobs where youve used relevant skills. This is because, unlike in the private sector, the entire application process is extremely bureaucratic. That means theres probably not much wiggle room on posted requirements, end dates and so on, Windley said.Depending on the specifics of the job, research experienc e may be necessary. Other jobs may require you to have passed a specific certification test or complete a training course. So follow all the steps in the application process, Windley said, and dont take shortcuts.Landing a government job takes a willingness to play by the rules. Simply knowing the right person might not land you the position unless youre qualified. If you devote some time to browsing government job websites and investigate where the jobs are in your state, local and federal government and selectively apply for positions youre trained to hold, youll save yourself a lot of time and frustration.Ben Thomas, a member of the Riley Guide writing team, is an expert on many topics related to the job hunt.
